Tip: How to cut a round hole in sheet metal!
ByThe Duct Shop.

One of the common tasks required in the installation of a HVAC duct run is the need to cut a round hole into a piece sheet metal. This may be a piece of duct, or even a plenum that you need the hole in. Here at The Duct Shop, we have cut thousands of holes and would like to share with you a few short cuts that you can use.

First, you will need to gather the right tools for the job. You probably already have a flat head screw driver and a hammer in your toolbox. The only other tool you will need is a pair of Sheet Metal Snips. If you do not have a pair, you can buy them at www.theductshop.com on the HVAC tools tab. So, first you will need to draw the hole in the proper location that you want to cut it in. Just mark the diameter on the sheet metal with a marker or pen. Next, take your flat-head screwdriver and place it at a slight angle on the sheet metal near the center of the hole you want to cut. While holding it there, strike the side of the screwdriver blade with your hammer, right where the screwdriver is in contact with the sheet metal to pierce the sheet metal. You may have to strike the hammer a few times. The goal is to create a starter hole that you can get the sheet metal snips into.

Once you get the snips into the starter hole, simply cut the sheet metal from the center toward the line you drew and then follow the line all the way around. Now you have a hole of the proper size and location to start your duct run. You may want to buy a Start Collar from The Duct Shop to install into your newly created hole for your HVAC, heating, air conditioning or exhaust duct run. The Duct Shop www.theductshop.com carries a full line of duct and accessories for all of your HVAC needs.
